The 1847 is, like many Philadelphia quarter eagles from the 1840′s, a conditionally rare and very undervalued issue. There are likely fewer than a dozen known in Uncirculated and nearly all are in the MS60 to MS62. Examples with original color and choice surfaces are extremely difficult to locate.
This fresh to the market example exhibits wonderful deep green-gold color and it is almost certainly undipped and original. The strike is sharp and the surfaces are pleasing for the grade with just some light scuffs seen below the coloration on the obverse.
The last PCGS MS61 1847 quarter eagle to sell at auction brought $3,220 as Heritage 2/10: 1460 and it lacked CAC approval.
At current market levels, this coin is exceptional value.
CAC has approved one in this grade with two finer.
