Variety 7-L, D Near D reverse. Designated on the holder by NGC; early die state with sharp traces of the first mintmark punch clearly visible above the numerator.

The 1846-D/D is similar in appearance and to the 1848-D/D half eagle (Variety 22-O) and like its larger counterpart, it is a very rare coin which is avidly collected by Dahlonega specialists. Both NGC and PCGS recognize this variety and no advanced set of quarter eagles from this mint can be complete without its inclusion. I believe there a few dozen known but in higher grades, the 1846-D/D is very rare. The finest known is a PCGS MS61 in a specialized collection which was earlier sold as a PCGS AU58 as Bass II: 383 where it realized $12,650.

This newly discovered example is fresh to the market and it is likely the most original piece currently known. Both the obverse and the reverse show lovely deep attractive color and there is a considerable amount of dirt in the surfaces which clearly indicate this piece has never been cleaned or dipped.

In January 2008, a PCGS AU58 with CAC approval sold for $8,625 and I honestly believe that this NGC/CAC piece is the more attractive of the two.

An exceptional opportunity for the advanced collector of Dahlonega quarter eagles.

CAC has approved two in this grade and none finer.
