In terms of overall rarity, the 1842-O is the second rarest quarter eagle from this mint after the 1845-O. Around 125 exist in all grades with most in the EF40 to AU50 range. Properly graded AU55′s are scarce, especially with sharp strikes and natural color.
This 1842-O has been off the market for a number of years and it shows nice old medium to deep reddish-gold color which is “right” for this issue. The strike is well sharper than normal with none of the die rust, lapping or cracks seen on later states. A few light old hairlines can barely be seen on the reverse and the eye appeal is excellent for the date and grade.
No PCGS graded AU55 1842-O quarter eagle has sold at auction since 2008 and only two have sold since 2002. The last problem-free NGC AU55 to sell at auction brought $3,290 as Heritage 2/14: 5175.
In higher grades, this date jumps appreciably in price, making a nice AU55 such as this the best value grade for many collectors.
