The 1897-O eagle, like the 1894-O and 1895-O, is a date which is not often seen below AU55 to AU58 and not often seen above MS62. The 1897-O is very scarce in properly graded MS63 and almost never available in MS64 and above.
This is an uncommonly choice example for the date and grade with nice frosty luster, soft orange-gold and rose color and very choice surfaces which show fewer marks than usual. A small grease stain on the eagle’s head is mint-made; otherwise, this coin has serious claims to a higher grade.
Heritage 3/13: 4317, graded MS63 by PCGS and approved by CAC, sold for $6,169 and it was not as choice as the present example, in my opinion.
If available, a PCGS graded MS64 1897-O eagle would cost in the $12,500-15,000 range and might not have much better eye appeal than this high end MS63.
CAC has approved three in this grade with one finer.
