Old Green Holder; by today’s standards this coin grades at least EF45 if not AU50.

Fewer than 100 examples of this date are known from an original mintage of just 13,500. Despite its obvious rarity, the 1868-S is an overlooked date; even among a series (With Motto San Francisco eagles) which contains numerous underrated issues. The 1868-S is not often seen above EF45 to AU50 and the eye appeal for this date tends to be decidedly below average.

This lustrous example shows a typical flat strike for the issue but it is lustrous and shows enough detail to give it strong consideration at a higher grade. The surfaces show no detracting marks and there is a touch of orange-gold color which is appealing.

Just two PCGS EF40′s have sold at auction since the end of 2010 and the last brought $2,115 in August 2014. A PCGS EF45 brought $2,350 as Heritage 2/13: 4913.

For the collector on a limited budget, this is about the nicest 1868-S which he will be able to obtain.
