THE MOST UNDERVALUED LIBERTY HEAD QUARTER EAGLE
There are numerous undervalued dates in the Liberty Quarter Eagle series but the single most unappreciated of these may well be the 1867. Only 3,200 business strikes were made and as few as 50-60 are known today yet a nice example of this date can still be purchased for $5,000 or less.
This light yellow-gold and pale orange example shows very little actual wear but it is slightly scuffy as is the case with most circulated 1867 quarter eagles. The obverse is choice and has enough “meat on the bone” to qualify as a 58 on its own; a mark on the reverse below the left wing precludes a higher grade.
The last really nice PCGS AU55 1867 quarter eagle to sell at auction brought $5,463 as Heritage 10/10: 4635.
As a point of reference, this date has a comparable CAC population to the famous 1864 and 1865 quarter eagles yet it is priced at just a fraction of those two issues.
CAC has approved one in AU55 and one finer (MS61). For the date, only three have been approved so far.
