Based on current PCGS population figures, the Type Three Liberty Head double eagle is 38x rarer than its counterpart the St. Gaudens double eagle. There are 224 Type Three Liberty Head double eagles graded by PCGS in comparison to 8608 With Motto Saints. Despite this huge disparity, the Liberty Head double eagle is currently priced at just a bit more than double the price of a nice PCGS MS66. And this is not taking into account the fact that PCGS Liberty Head double eagles in MS66 have been priced as high as $11,000-12,000 as recently as a few years ago. They seem like great value at current levels, especially if the coin itself is actually nice.

This is a true Superb Gem coin with very choice surfaces, undisturbed satiny luster and rich natural orange-gold color. Interestingly, the obverse is choicer than the reverse as there are some scuffs below RIC in AMERICA. This is a coin which was a 66 years ago and will always have superior eye appeal to most of the coins so graded by PCGD.

I don’t ordinarily handle generic gold in MS66 but at current levels, I find properly graded MS66 Twenty Libs to be one of the best deals in the market.
