The 1855-S is the second double eagle produced at the San Francisco mint. Unlike its counterparts from 1856-S and 1857-S, its population hasn’t been swelled by shipwrecks and properly graded AU58′s with nice color and choice surfaces are scarce.

This choice, lightly worn example is characterized by pleasing natural orange-gold color with some darker hues seen on the highlights. It is likely that this piece saw no actual circulation but it has some friction on the relief details from exposure to other coins while it was loose in a bag.

The last auction record for a comparable PCGS AU58 example with CAC is Heritage 1/15: 7394 which sold for $5,405.

The next jump up in grade, to MS61, means an expenditure of $12,000-14,000. This makes a nice AU58 at less than half this amount an excellent value in my opinion.

CAC has approved 27 in this grade with just six finer.
