Along with the 1852-O, this is the most available New Orleans double eagle. This makes it popular with type collectors who desire a single presentable coin of this denomination from this popular branch mint. The 1851-O has become relatively hard to find in problem-free EF grades.
This is a solid coin for the grade with nice surfaces and very pleasing natural green-gold color. There are no detracting marks and the strike is typical for the date with some weakness on the radial lines within the stars.
Only four PCGS EF40 examples of this date have sold at auction since the end of 2008 and the last was in a Heritage 10/12 auction.
This is just about the best available quality for an O mint double eagle at less than $5,000 and it should see considerable attention from collectors.
