This popular date has a mintage of just 2,630 business strikes. It is the second scarcest Three Dollar gold piece from the Civil War with the exception of the rare 1865.

This light yellow-gold example is frosty with a bit of prooflike reflectiveness seen in the protected areas. The surfaces show no marks of note and the die finishing lines seen on both sides are diagnostic to this issue (and are seen on most other gold coins dated 1864 as well). The eye appeal is excellent.

The last auction record for a PCGS AU53 1864 Three Dollar gold piece was Heritage 6/08: 1924 at $4,600. There have been only two AU53′s sold at auction since 1999.

If you are looking for a nice quality historically significant U.S. gold coin priced at under $4,000 this might be a good choice for you.

CAC has approved this one example in AU53 with fourteen finer.
