Only 1,760 business strikes were produced and around 50 or so are known. In AU grades, the 1869 is very rare and it is probably unique in Uncirculated with the sole piece I have seen being the Bass 2: 1164 coin graded MS64 by both PCGS and NGC.
As with nearly all known business strike 1869 half eagles, this piece has abraded surfaces. However, this example has nice medium orange-gold color and plenty of semi-prooflike reflectiveness. A curving mark over the 69 in the date serves as identification.
The last PCGS AU50 example of this date to sell at auction brought $4,456 as Heritage 8/11: 25250. An NGC AU55, which appears comparable to the current PCGS AU50, sold for $5,288 as Heritage 10/12: 5911.
