Variety 1.

The 1852-C is the most common Charlotte half eagle. It is an excellent choice for type purposes as it tends to be well made and it can be found with pleading color and choice surfaces. That said, it has become hard to locate one in EF or AU grades which hasn’t been dipped or processed.

This is a totally original coin with superb rich natural orange-gold color which is even and completely “right” for the issue. The surfaces are clean and retain a considerable amount of luster while the strike is sharp save for a bit of customary weakness at the centers. This coin has not seen much in the way of actual wear and the eye appeal is far above average for the grade.

Surprisingly, no PCGS AU55 examples of this date, save for this coin, have sold at auction since December 2008.

If you are looking for a single choice, appealing Charlotte half eagle for your type set, this piece is absolutely perfect.

CAC has approved just this one coin in AU55 with 16 finer.
