The 1850-D is the fourth rarest of 26 half eagles from this mint and the seventh rarest in higher grades. Despite this, it gets little respect outside of the specialist community. In my experience, choice 1850-D half eagles with nice color and surfaces are extremely hard to locate.
This deep green-gold example shows a good amount of dirt caked into the lettering on the reverse and it has very clean surfaces. As always, the mintmark is not boldly impressed but this is not a “weak D” coin. The eye appeal is excellent and I have not handled many significantly finer 1850-D half eagles in some time.
The last AU53 1850-D half eagle to sell at auction was an NGC coin which brought $3,278 as Heritage 7/11: 4749. Only three examples kin this grade have been auctioned since 2008.
I would put this date high on the list of undervalued half eagles from this mint and at under $4,000, this coin is an extremely good value.
