As with many of the San Francisco half eagles from the 1890′s, the 1899-S is a condition rarity. It is very common in the lower Uncirculated grades but there are fewer than a dozen known in Gem. The finest known is the remarkable NGC 69/PCGS 68 ex Clapp/Eliasberg coin which sold for $103,500 in 2010.
This fresh-to-the-market Premium gem is virtually “as made” with superb detail, unmolested frosty luster and nice light green-gold and rose color. A small contact mark in front of the second star keeps this from an otherwise plausible MS66 grade.
A non-CAC NGC MS66 sold for $9,775 in the Heritage April 2012 auction.
This is likely the third finest known 1899-S half eagle, trailing only the above referenced MS68 wonder coin and a single MS66 at PCGS.
A wonderful piece for the type collector looking for a special With Motto San Francisco half eagle.
CAC has approved one in this grade with none finer.
