Like most of the New Orleans half dollars from the 1840′s, the 1848-O is a conditionally rare issue. It is common in circulated grades and available from time to time in MS60 to MS62 but is scarce in properly graded MS63 and rare above this. The Gardner MS66 which sold for $25, 850 graded MS66 at NGC and is by far the finest I am aware of.
This choice example shows natural silvery-grey color with the deepest hues seen in the obverse fields. It is frosty and well struck and were the coin just a bit more vibrant, it might have graded MS64 as it certainly has a paucity of visible.
A non-CAC approved NGC MS63 example recently sold for $3,290 as Heritage 4/15: 4475.
In my opinion, there are few more undervalued series than No Motto half dollars and the New Orleans issues in MS63 and MS64 seem like particular good deals at current levels.
CAC has approved just two in this grade and only two finer (65 and 66).
