O-109, R-1. Pointed 6, No Stems.

This is an important Redbook variety which is common in all circulated grades but which is not often seen with totally original surfaces and choice natural color.

The toning which this coin shows is simply breathtaking with old, concentric rainbow hues seen on both sides, most likely from storage in an old Wayte Raymond coin album. The surfaces are choice and what looks like a scratch to the left of Liberty’s head is actually a pattern in the toning. As always, the strike is slightly soft in the centers but this coin is just lovely and is truly high end for the date and grade.

Only two PCGS AU50 examples of this variety were sold at auction in 2014 and the nicer of the pair, not blessed by CAC, still sold for $4,406 as Heritage 1/14: 4347.

If I were collecting Bust half dollars by date or variety, this is the exact “look” I would want all my coins to have!

CAC has approved four in this grade with 20 finer.
