The 1836 half cent is a Proof-only issue that was produced in an original format (struck in 1836) and as a restrike (struck with both the reverse of 1831-1836 and known as the “first restrike” and with the reverse of 1840-1857; known as the “second restrike). The 1836 Originals are not as rare as the Restrikes but, in my opinion, are more desirable for being made in the year in which they were dated.

This very choice, reflective example shows dark brown color with some pale gold shadings on the obverse and a hint of lime pastels on the reverse. There are a few minor flyspecks on both sides but none are terribly large or detracting and the fields lack any marks or hairlines of consequence.  The eye appeal is excellent.

Two examples were recently sold and they offer interesting comparables. Heritage 4/13: 1082, graded PR64 by PCGS, brought $10,575 while Heritage 4/13: 1083, graded PR64+ by PCGS, brought $12,925. Neither was approved by CAC and the present example is clearly finer.

Proof half cents are extremely undervalued but this is likely to change after the amazing Missouri Cabinet is sold at auction in early 2014. Prices for coins like this Proof 1836 could increase dramatically.
