VERY RARE UNCIRCULATED 1854-D GOLD DOLLAR
Variety 6-H. Bass Pedigree, designated by PCGS.
The 1854-D is numismatically significant as the final Type One gold dollar produced at the Dahlonega mint. There were only 2,935 struck and I rank this as the fourth rarest of 13 gold dollars from this mint. The 1854-D is very rare in Uncirculated with less than 10 know and most of these are in the MS60 to MS62 range.
This uncommonly well-struck examples lack the softness and planchet issues endemic to gold dollars from this mint. The surfaces are vibrant and frosty with a lack of wear or friction and the appearance of a higher grade. There is a grade-limiting scratch in the left obverse field; if this were not present, an MS62 or better grade would be likely.
Not a single PCGS MS61 example of this date has sold at auction since Green Pond: 1006 brought $13,800 in the Heritage 2004 sale.
A very important coin for the advanced gold dollar specialist.
