RARE CHOICE UNCIRCULATED 1871-S QUARTER EAGLE
As one might expect, the 1871-S quarter eagle is a scarce date in Uncirculated with a likely dozen or so known. It appears that a very small group was uncovered a number of years ago which yielded a few really nice examples; the finest of which was an incredible PCGS MS66 which last sold as Heritage 6/05: 7580 where it brought $20,125.
This fresh-to-the-market example is not from this group but it is similarly choice with an unmolested appearance. The luster is soft and frosty and it rests below a pleasing medium rose and orange-gold overtone. A few small copper spots attest to this coin’s originality and there just a few very small, shallow scuffs seen in the fields. The eye appeal is exceptional.
Only two MS63 examples of the 1871-S quarter eagle have appeared at auction since 1999 and the last realized $4,313 as Heritage 10/06: 2519.
This is the best 1871-S quarter eagle I have offered for sale in a number of years.
