The 1869-S quarter eagle is common in circulated grades but it is rare in Uncirculated with an estimated fifteen or so known, mostly in the MS60 to MS61 range. Most of the slabbed MS60 to MS61 examples I have seen have been very low end.

This choice, wholesome example is crisply detailed and it shows pleasing natural rose and medium orang-gold color. The luster is especially strong for the date and grade while there are fewer marks in the fields than one might expect.

The last APR for a PCGS MS61 1869-S quarter eagle was Heritage 1/12: 6146 at $3,220; this coin was not approved by CAC. Between October 2010 and January 2012, there were five APR’s for non-CAC PCGS MS61 examples which ranged from a low of $3,220 to a high of $3,550.

This is among the nicer 1869-S quarter eagles that I have handled.

CAC has approved two in this grade and two finer.
