VERY RARE UNCIRCULATED 1867 QUARTER EAGLE

Coin quiz: what’s the rarest quarter eagle struck after 1865? Certainly the low mintage 1875 or maybe the 1881, right? Actually, the answer is the overlooked 1867 of which only 50-75 are known from an original mintage of 3,200 business strikes. There are five or six in Uncirculated with the finest a PCGS MS65 which sold for $24,150 as Heritage 1/99: 7959.

As with virtually all known 1867 quarter eagles, this piece has somewhat scuffy surfaces but there are no marks which are detracting. The surfaces are frosty with a hard slightly prooflike finish and are overlaid with natural rose and gold hues.

The last MS61 to sell at auction crossed the block all the way back in 1998. I sold a different NGC MS61 in 2015 which was the first Uncirculated 1867 quarter eagle which I had handled since I sold the finest known MS65 (see above) around ten years ago.

This is a Condition Census example of one of the most underrated 19th century American gold coins.
