EXTREMELY RARE UNCIRCULATED 1855-D QUARTER EAGLE
Variety 19-N.
The 1855-D is not only one of the two rarest quarter eagles from this mint (along with the 1856-D) it is one of the rarest issues of any denomination from this mint; far more so than the 1861-D dollar and half eagle or the 1854-D three dollar. It is seen mostly in the EF40 to AU53 range and it is extremely rare in Uncirculated with just three or four known.
This example is uncommonly well made with bold definition noted at the centers and sharper than normal borders. The surfaces are vibrant and frosty with even medium orange-god color seen on both sides. There is a series of small marks on the face and minor scuffs in the obverse fields.
The only relevant comparable is Heritage 1/09: 4011, also graded MS61 by NGC, which went for $44,850.
The market for Dahlonega rarities appears strong and this important quarter eagle may be the only shot you get to own an Uncirculated 1855-D.
