With few exceptions, the Philadelphia quarter eagles from this decade are scarce and undervalued. The 1849 is reasonably easy to locate in grades below AU55 but properly graded AU58′s are hard to find. In Uncirculated, this date is quite rare with probably no more thaan a dozen accounetd for.
This piece has lovely deep natural green-gold color with some reddish hues seen in the fields. There is little actuaal wear and much remaining luster as well as some small amounts of natural dirt in the lettering on the reverse. A small staple scratch on the obverse runs from inside of the star twelve to the cheek and this is hard to see unless the coin is tilted towards a light source.
No PCGS AU58 1849 quarter eagle has been sold at auction since March 2009 and there are only seven auction records for PCGS AU58′s since 1999.
