SECOND FINEST KNOWN 1847 QUARTER EAGLE
With the exception of the high mintage 1845, all of the Philadelphia quarter eagles from the 1840′s are rare in Uncirculated. The 1847 is no exception with perhaps a dozen in Mint State, nearly all in the 60-62 range. I know of just one coin finer than the present example: a PCGS MS64 which I sold to a Kansas specialist many years ago.
This fresh to the market example is choice and original with nice natural yellow-gold color and unmolested frosty surfaces. There are a few scattered abrasions on the obverse which do not detract and which are not out of keeping with the assigned grade.
No example finer than MS62 has ever sold at auction.
If you collect Liberty Head quarter eagles or seek Condition Census pre-Civil War gold coinage, this wonderful 1847 is worth serious consideration.
CAC has approved one in this grade with none finer.
