Variety 7-L. D/Near D, designated on holder by PCGS.

A small number of 1846-D quarter eagles show a spectacular blundered mintmark variety with the original D punched too low and far left, then effaced and re-entered in its proper position. I believe that only a few dozen are known and only the early die state with the first D clearly visible qualifies for a price premium.

This evenly worn russet-gold example has relatively good detail for the variety and grade with the base of the mispunched D clear below 5x magnification. There are no appreciable marks on the surfaces and some dirt can be seen enclosed in the lettering on the reverse.

The last auction comparable is a non-CAC PCGS EF45 which sold for $2,904 as Heritage 7/12: 4706; it had conspicuous marks on the obverse and had been cleaned.

This rare variety is an essential member of any comprehensive set of Dahlonega quarter eagles and it is the first I have offered in over a year.

CAC has approved this one coin in EF40 with three better for a total of four overall.
