The 1845-O is, far and away, the rarest quarter eagle from this mint. Only 4,000 were struck and well under 100 are known with most in the VF-EF range.

This piece is a full EF45 but it has likely been “netted” down to a 40 grade due to the presence of two small, shallow digs on the obverse: one above and one below the bow knot. The color is exceptional with nicely contrasting green and rose hues; some dirt can be seen in the recesses on the reverse.

Only one PCGS EF40 has been sold at auction since 2008 and it is ex Heritage 3/11: 4631 where it brought $4,025.

While prices for this date have risen in the last few years, it is still highly undervalued when compared to comparable Charlotte and Dahlonega quarter eagles.

From the RYK collection.
