There are six truly rare issues in the Dahlonega quarter eagle series and the 1842-D is one of these. Of the 4,643 struck, fewer than 100 are known and probably no more than a dozen are what I would regard as choice, original coins.

This is a lovely original example with the detail and luster of a full EF45. Both sides show nice medium color and the centers are sharper than usual for the date. Most importantly, this piece has actual eye appeal; a concept that is pretty alien for a date that tends to come poorly made and poorly persevered.

No PCGS EF40 examples of this date have sold at auction since the summer of 2004. Heritage 1/14: 6425, graded EF45 by PCGS and not approved by CAC, brought $4,713.

A wonderful coin for the date collector of Dahlonega quarter eagles.

CAC has approved just this one coin in EF40 with five finer.
