A total of 8,720 business strike 1890 quarter eagles were made and this date is not often found in grades higher than MS64. In fact, PCGS has graded just four finer.
This piece has the naked-eye appeance of a Gem and it is held back from the MS65 level mainly by a few tiny marks below TATE in STATES on the reverse. It shows nice light rose and orange-gold color over frosty surfaces.
As with many quarter eagle from the 1880′s and 1890′s, this date is very undervalued in Uncirculated grades.
CAC has approved three in this grade with just one finer.
