Only 73 Proofs were struck; under half are known today and the total number extant is likely around 30. This issue is extremely rare in Gem and almost never seen with Deep Cameo contrast.
A strong case could be made for calling this coin a Deep Cameo as it has strong black and white contrast between the devices and the fields. The obverse has a few minor marks in the right field but no hairlines; the reverse has a small toning spot below the F in OF and a lintmark down from the first A in AMERICA. The appearance is exceptional for the date and grade.
A non-CAC PCGS PR64CAM sold for $12,650 as Heritage 12/10: 4340.
As I have stated elsewhere, no other area of the Proof gold market offers as much value as PR64 and PR65 examples of the dates from the 1880′s and early 1890′s.
CAC has approved one in this grade and just one finer (PR66CAM).
