RARE LOW MINTAGE 1880 QUARTER EAGLE GRADED MS64+ BY PCGS
Only 2,960 business strike quarter eagles were made and this date did not see extensive use in commerce. Many of the survivors grade AU55 to MS62 but the 1880 quarter eagle becomes rare in MS64 and very rare in Gem. I am aware of three or four properly graded MS65′s and none finer than this.
The obverse of this coin is amazing and is an unabashed Gem with great color and choice fields. The reverse is just a tiny bit less choice with some small contact marks seen in the field below TES OF. Both sides are a mixture of mint frost and semi-prooflike reflectiveness and are overlaid with soft rose and orange-gold color. This coin has a wonderfully fresh appearance and has obviously never been processed or played with.
The only PCGS MS64 to sell at auction since 2009 brought $5,288 as Heritage 10/12: 5607. The only PCGS MS65 to sell at auction since 1998 was Stacks Bowers 2011 ANA: 7619 which realized $14,375. Neither of these was CAC approved. The present coin is plated in Coinfacts and it is the only MS64+ graded by either service.
The 1880-1890 quarter eagles for an in interesting subset and this piece would make a great representative in a world-class set. Or, it is perfect in a collection of really “neat” coins with visual appeal and proven rarity.
CAC has approved one in MS64/MS64+ and one finer (65).
