The 1856-D is the key issue in the Dahlonega quarter eagle series and it is the rarest single coin ever struck at this mint. Only 874 were made and around 50-60 exist today with most in the EF45 to AU53 range. It is the hardest coin from this mint to grade due to its funky strike.

This is a choice, pleasing coin with claims to a higher grade. The obverse shows typical flatness with a lack of detail at the center; the reverse is a bit better struck. Both sides show medium natural gold color and there is some dirt seen in the recesses on the reverse. With just a touch more luster present, I could easily see this coin grading higher.

There are no auction records for a slabbed EF45 example of this date. The last AU50 was a PCGS coin that brought $21,850 back in Goldberg’s June 2000 sale.

This date is seldom offered for sale and as it is relatively affordable for the issue it should be the object of considerable attention from Dahlonega quarter eagle collectors.
