The rarity profile of this date has not been totally altered by shipwrecks as have many of the Type One issues from San Francisco. The 1860-S is moderately scarce in the middle to higher AU grades and it is rare in Uncirculated. Only a small percentage of the examples known in AU55 show natural color and choice surfaces.

This is a handsome coin for the date and grade with natural medium orange-gold color over surfaces which, while abraded, are still more choice than usual for the issue. As always, the strike is somewhat soft at the borders with the edges having a somewhat beveled appearance.

A low end PCGS AU55 brought $3,673 as Heritage 1/15: 7436. There are no recent APR’s for an AU55 example from either service with CAC approval.

This date is very hard to find in grades above this and, for most collectors, this represents the best value.

CAC has approved 10 in this grade with 16 finer.
