The 1857-C is numismatically significant as the first of just two Type Three gold dollars from this mint. It is more common than its counterpart the 1859-C in terms of overall availability but it is rarer in high grades.
This nice, original example shows deep, even green-gold color. The surfaces have some areas of mint-made roughness as always seen on the issue but it shows a strong full date and no major distractions.
Only seven problem-free PCGS AU50 1857-C gold dollars have sold at auction since 2000. The last was ex Heritage 12/10: 4261 and it realized $2,990.
An affordable but clearly above-average example of this popular issue.
