RARE AND POPULAR GEM 1865 GOLD DOLLAR WITH CAC APPROVAL

Of the 3,700 business strikes for this date, it is likely that not more than 100 survive, making the 1865 the second rarest Civil War gold dollar after the 1863. The 1865 is mostly seen in Uncirculated grades with survivors usually low end (MS60 to MS62) or superb (MS66 to MS68).

This coin has been off the market for a decade and it is a wonderful borderline Gem with rich yellow-gold color over surfaces which are partly frosty and partly reflective. A splash of deeper golden-orange in the left obverse field and a tiny mint-made copper spot in the right obverse make this coin easy to identify. A few marks narrowly preclude a full MS65 or higher grade and I note a touch of weakness on the 86 in the date, as made.

No PCGS MS64 1865 gold dollar has been auctioned since this coin (see pedigree below) sold in April 2006. A CAC approved MS65 recently brought $10,063 as Lot 743 in the Scotsman 7/16 sale.

This issue is dually popular with gold dollar specialists and Civil War gold collectors and this is the best available quality for the date at under $10,000.
