BORDERLINE GEM 1880-S HALF EAGLE
The 1880-S half eagle is common in grades through MS63. It is somewhat elusive in MS64 but it is a true condition rarity in MS65 with just two currently graded as such by PCGS with none finer.
This semi-prooflike borderline Gem shows attractive rose and yellow-gold color with very sharp overall detail. Just a few small abrasions can be seen in the fields.
Heritage 4/17: 16720, also graded PCGS/CAC MS64+ realized $2,115.
The last PCGS MS65 1880-S half eagle to sell at auction brought $7,475 all the way back in March, 2006 and a CAC approved one could bring more than this today.
CAC has graded 32 in MS64 (including some in MS64+) with none finer.
