SUPERB CAC APPROVED PCGS AU55 1841-C HALF EAGLE, EX NORWEB COLLECTION, PEDIGREED BACK TO 1909

Norweb Pedigree, designated by PCGS.

The 1841-C is one of the scarcer Charlotte half eagles with an estimated 125-150 known from an original mintage of 21,467.  Properly graded AU55 to AU58 pieces have become increasingly hard to locate and only a handful are known with fully natural color and choice surfaces.

I have handled a significant percentage of the known AU55 to AU58 1841-C half eagles and I doubt if there is a better survivor in that grade range than this piece. It shows lovely natural orange-gold and greenish colors over lustrous and very choice surfaces. Despite some weakness on the stars at the left, the strike is sharper than normal for the issue and the overall eye appeal is excellent.

The last PCGS AU55 1841-C half eagle to sell at auction was a non-CAC piece which brought $6,463 as Heritage 2/16: 3379. No other piece had sold at auction in over a decade.

Unless you are adamant about adding an Uncirculated example of this date to your set of Charlotte half eagles, this is essentially the best 1841-C you will find.

Ex ANR 8/06: 1381 (as PCGS AU53) where it sold for $6,038; earlier sold as Lot 803 in the October 1987 Norweb Collection where it realized $1,155; obtained by the Norweb Family from Thomas Elder in 1909. I believe this is the oldest continual pedigree for an 1841-C half eagle.

CAC has approved 4 in this grade with 5 finer.
