GEM AU 1849-D QUARTER EAGLE, PCGS/CAC AU50

Variety 12-N, Low Date.

The 1849-D is a much scarcer issue than the 1844-D through 1848-D quarter eagles. While the certified population of AU50 to AU55 pieces is seemingly high, most of these coins have been dipped or processed and examples with natural color and choice surfaces are very difficult to locate.

This deeply toned 1849-D quarter eagles shows exceptional rich orange and reddish-gold flashes with some dirt in the recesses. It shows a typical somewhat flat strike but the surfaces are virtually perfect and you wouldn't think twice if you saw this exact coin in a 55 holder.

Two non-CAC PCGS AU50 1849-D quarter eagles have sold at auction since 2010 and they both crossed the block in 2016; one realized $2,820 while the other brought $3,055. It should be pointed out that comparing those two coins with the present piece is like comparing a pair of Kia's with a Bentley.

This is among the most aesthetically pleasing 1849-D quarter eagles I have ever seen.

CAC has approved this one coin in AU50 with 13 finer.
