GEM 1916-S DOUBLE EAGLE, PCGS/CAC MS65

Simpson pedigree, as noted by PCGS.

The 1916-S double eagle was formerly rare in properly graded MS65 but gradeflation and overseas hoards has made this date far more available. It should be stressed that most of the coins graded MS65 and even MS66 are low-end and true Gems remain difficult to locate.

This piece is notable for its dynamic rich natural orange-gold and green colors which are seen in different configurations on either side. While there are a few scuffs near the right side of the olive branch, I can see no reason why this coin didn't grade at least MS65+ if not even MS66. A few natural toning spots can be seen on the reverse; these are a good hallmark of this coin's originality.

The last PCGS/CAC MS65 1916-S double eagle to sell at auction realized $3,760 as Heritage 4/17: 5786. Stacks Bowers 3/16: 14437, also graded MS65 but in an old green label holder, brought $4,230.

This lovely 1916-S is nice enough for nearly any specialized St. Gaudens double eagle set.

CAC has approved 84 in this grade with 26 finer.

Ex Bob Simpson Collection and sold as a duplicate by Legend Rare Coins (replaced by a PCGS/CAC MS66) and purchased en bloc from the Dr. William Crawford Collection of St. Gaudens Double Eagles.
