SUPERB CAC APPROVED PCGS MS65+ 1914-S DOUBLE EAGLE

Simpson pedigree, as noted by PCGS.

The 1914-S double eagle is very common in MS65 but it becomes scarce in properly graded MS66 and it is non-existent finer. Most seen in MS65 holders are commercially graded and are low-end.

This is an especially well struck piece for the date with thick, frosty luster and exceptional natural deep orange-gold and lime splashes across the obverse and the reverse. There are probably just a few too many small ticks on the surfaces for this coin to grade MS66 but it blows the doors off of any other MS65+ 1914-S $20 that I have handled.

No PCGS approved MS65+ 1914-S double eagles appear to have sold at auction. The last example to cross the block brought $3,290 as Heritage 6/16: 8509.

If you can find a PCGS/CAC MS66 1914-S double eagle (only 17 are known at the present time) you are likely looking at an $8,000-9,000 purchase.

CAC has approved 111 in MS65 (with an unknown number in 65+) with 17 finer (all grading MS66).

Ex: Bob Simpson Collection and sold as a duplicate by Legend Rare Coins and replaced by a PCGS/CAC MS66; acquired en bloc from the Dr. William Crawford as part of a high quality complete set of St. Gaudens double eagles.
