The 1911-D is a common coin in MS65 and is even available with some regularity in MS66 but St. Gaudens collectors know that most coins in MS65 and MS66 holders are low-end for the grade.
This is a bona-fide Gem example which would look absolutely right even in a full MS66 holder. The obverse is superb with exceptional color and a near-absence of marks; a few small ticks on the feathers do not detract.
A CAC approved PCGS MS65+ 1911-D Saint sold for $3,408 as Heritage 10/16: 4266 and a non-CAC PCGS MS65+ brought $3,525 as Heritage 2/17: 27408.
CAC has approved 277 in MS65 (this includes an unknown number in MS65+) with 98 finer.
Ex: Bob Simpson collection and sold via Legend Rare Coins when the Simpson Collection replaced this coin with an MS67+; earlier in the collection of Dr. William Crawford.
