LOVELY PCGS/CAC AU50 1883-CC $20 IN AN OLD GREEN LABEL HOLDER

Housed in an old green label PCGS and undergraded by today's standards; I grade this coin a solid AU53 with a better-than-average shot to grade AU55.

The 1883-CC is among the more available Type Three double eagles from Carson City. It becomes progressively scarcer the further up the grading ladder you ascend and it becomes very scarce in MS61 and higher.

This minimally worn example retains much natural mint luster below rich yellow-gold color. Unlike most CC double eagles, this piece has never been dipped or enhanced and it would make an excellent type coin as a result.

The last three "normal" non-CAC PCGS AU50 examples of this date to sell at auction all realized $4,465. The last PCGS AU53 brought $5,288 while the last PCGS AU55 sold for $6,463.

Many of the old green holder CC double eagles I see on the market are "problem" coins which are destined to stay entombed as a result of surface issues. Choice pieces such as the present coin are usually "broken out" and upgraded.

CAC has approved 17 in this grade with 96 finer.
