1866 DOUBLE EAGLE IN AN OLD GREEN LABEL HOLDER

Housed in an old green label PCGS holder and seemingly way undergraded; I consider this coin to be a solid AU50 to AU53 by today's standards.

The 1866 is numismatically significant as the first-year-of-issue Philadelphia Type Two double eagle. It is not as scarce as the 1868-1871 P mint issues of this type but it is harder to locate than the 1867 and the 1872.

This coin has a considerable amount of luster below rich yellow-gold color which is contrasted by deeper hues on the relief details. There are some scuffs seen in the left obverse field bu this is a really nice coin for the issue with excellent overall eye appeal.

A "normal" non-CAC PCGS EF45 example of this date is worth in the $2,250-2,500 range. A PCGS AU50 with CAC approval brought $3,878 as Legend 5/16: 433.

CAC has approved 3 in this grade with 58 finer.
