PCGS/CAC/OGH 1864-S $20.00

Housed in an old green label PCGS holder and, in my opinion, a solid EF45 by today's standards.

The 1864-S is a popular Civil War date whose rarity profile in higher grades was changed by shipwrecks. It remains difficult to locate in collector grades with natural color.

This dark russet example shows deeper hues on the relief details, likely from storage in a European vault. The surfaces are clean and choice.

The last two "normal" PCGS EF40 1864-S double eagles to sell at auction realized $2,056 (2/17) and $1,998 (8/16).

CAC has approved 8 in this grade with 80 finer.
