PCGS VF35 1861 DOUBLE EAGLE IN AN OLD GREEN LABEL HOLDER
Housed in an old green label PCGS holder; I grade this coin EF40 or better by today's standards.
The 1861 has the highest mintage of any Type One issue and it is one of the two most available along with the 1857-S. The 1861 is popular and in demand due to its shipwreck status.
This is the only coin in the RYK "DOG" Collection which wasn't CAC approved. This is likely due to a very faint patch of hairlines between stars nine and ten on the obverse. I can almost guarantee you that this would be missed if the coin were resubmitted raw.
The last PCGS VF35 1861 double eagle to sell at auction realized $1,704 in April 2016 and it was well-worn and in a new holder.
