IMPRESSIVE OGH/PCGS 1853-O $20 GRADED EF45 BY PCGS

Housed in an old green label PCGS and, in my opinion, a solid AU50 or finer by today's standards.

The 1853-O is among the more available New Orleans double eagles but it is a conditionally scarcer issues with lower-end AU coins about the best quality generally available. This date is especially hard to locate with natural color and unmolested surfaces.

This coin came from a neat group of OGH New Orleans double eagles I bought at an ANA show a few years ago. Despite my temptation to crack them out and try to upgrade them, I kept them as is and sold them to various collectors, including RYK. This example is among the most original 1853-O double eagles I can recall with natural deep green-gold color and plenty of "meat" on both sides.

No PCGS EF45 1853-O double eagle has sold at auction since early 2011 and none have ever sold with a CAC sticker. The last PCGS AU50 to sell was a non-CAC piece which brought $11,750 as Heritage 4/17: 5500.

A great example of this important early New Orleans Type One issue.

CAC has approved six in this grade with 17 finer.

FROM THE RYK "DOG"  COLLECTION.
