COLLECTOR GRADE 1865-S INVERTED DATE EAGLE, OGH/CAC
Housed in an old green label PCGS holder; in my opinion this coin grades F12 by today's standards.
Varieties of the 1865-S eagle are known with a Normal Date and with a spectacular Inverted date in which the numerals 186 were punched upside down and then corrected. The Inverted Date is actually the more available of the two but it is still a very scarce coin in any grade.
It is not often that a coin graded VG8 can be called "choice" but this piece has nice color, clean surfaces and excellent detail.
No PCGS VG8 example of this variety has sold at auction since 2004. A PCGS VG10 in a newer holder and without CAC approval realized $4,406 as Heritage 9/13: 5265.
An affordable example of a very scarce and very interesting Civil War issue Eagle.
CAC has approved 2 in this grade with 5 finer.
