RARE COLLECTOR GRADE 1861-S EAGLE
Housed in an old PCGS green label holder and, in my opinion, at least a F15 if not a VF20 by today's standards.
Around 75-85 examples of this date are known from the original mintage of 15,500 and many 1861-S eagles show extensive wear from heavy use in commerce. The 1861-S eagle is popular due to its Civil War issuance and like all San Francisco eagles of this era, it is a fundamentally rare coin.
This extensively but evenly worn example shows very pleasing warm russet color which deepens towards the edges. It is very sharply detailed for the grade and the surfaces are extremely choice.
An NGC VF20 1861-S eagle which seems to be similar in sharpness to the present PCGS F12 sold for $2,585 as Heritage 12/15: 4646.
An affordable yet legitimately scarce coin.
CAC has approved 2 in this grade with 10 finer.
