RARE CAC APPROVED 1874 $2.50 IN PCGS MS63

As with most of the Philadelphia quarter eagles produced in the 1870's, the 1874 is a low mintage sleeper with only 3,920 made for circulation. Of the 100-125 which exist, fewer than a dozen grade Uncirculated and many of these fall in the MS60 to MS62 range. A single Gem exists (PCGS MS65) plus two or three in MS63 to MS64.

This flashy example is frosty and really well defined with bold central details. The obverse is a pleasing rich yellow-gold while the reverse is darker with some reddish splashes at the value. Both sides are very lightly marked and what appear as scuffs on the lower reverse are on the holder, not the coin.

No PCGS MS63 1874 quarter eagle has sold at auction since February 2001 while the last PCGS MS64 brought $9,258 in March 2011.

In my opinion, this coin represents excellent value and it would fit well into an advanced quarter eagle set.

CAC has approved one in this grade and one finer (MS64).
