CAC APPROVED PCGS MS61 1863-S DOUBLE EAGLE

Small S mintmark.

Until the discovery of a few dozen higher grade examples on shipwrecks, the 1863-S double eagle was virtually non-existent in Uncirculated. Today, it is sometimes seen in the MS60 to MS62 range but almost never finer than this.

Given its bright rose-gold luster, this piece is likely from a shipwreck but it lacks any sign of seawater "pitting" as seen on some 1863-S double eagles. This is  a really choice coin with vibrant luster, no appreciable deep marks and very pleasing eye appeal.

Six APR's exist for this date in PCGS MS61 since the beginning of 2016 but none were for CAC approved pieces; prices range from a low of $9,000 (1/18) to a high of $11,163 (4/17).

An important coin with demand spread between double eagle specialists and Civil War collectors.

CAC has approved six in this grade with six finer.
