PCGS/CAC EF45 NORRIS, GREGG AND NORRIS $5.00
Kagin-4, R-5. Reeded Edge.
The firm of Norris, Gregg and Norris produced half eagles in 1849. These coins are historically significant as they are the very first issues struck in California. The 1849 half eagle from this firm comes in three varieties: Plain edge (K-2) and Reeded edge (K-4); a rare variant of Reeded Edge NG&N half eagles (K-3) as no period after the word ALLOY.
This variety is not often seen with natural color and choice, unadulterated surfaces. This example is especially pleasing due to its rich original medium orange-gold color over surfaces which show some light marks in the fields. A spot at the W in WITHOUT appears to be mint-made. This is among the nicest NGN half eagles I have seen in this grade and it is an ideal representative for a California pioneer set.
This exact coin (see below) is one of just two CAC approved NGN Reeded Edge half eagles to sell at auction. The other—graded NGC/CAC AU58—brought $48000 as Stack’s Bowers 11/2024; 3278.
Ex Heritage 2/2024: 3196 at $20,400.
CAC has approved this one coin in EF45 with 10 finer.
